Chiral symmetry at finite T , the phase of the Polyakov loop and the spectrum of the Dirac operator. Abstract A recent Monte Carlo study of quenched QCD showed that the chiral conden-sate is non-vanishing above T c in the phase where the average of the Polyakov loop P is complex. We show how this is related to the dependence of the spectrum of the Dirac operator on the boundary conditions in Euclidean time. We use a random matrix model to calculate the density of small eigenvalues and the chiral condensate as a function of arg P. The chiral symmetry is restored in the arg P = 2π/3 phase at a higher T than in the arg P = 0 phase. In the phase arg P = π of the SU (2) gauge theory the chiral condensate stays nonzero for all T .

Gapless Dirac Spectrum at High Temperature
Using the overlap Dirac operator I show that, contrary to some expectations, even well above the critical temperature there is not necessarily a gap in the Dirac spectrum in pure SU(2) gauge theory. This happens when the Polyakov loop and the fermion boundary condition combine to give close to periodic boundary condition for the fermions in the time direction. In this Polyakov loop sector there...
متن کاملThe Polyakov Loop and the Eigenvalues of the Dirac Operator
Aiming at the link between confinement and chiral symmetry the Polyakov loop represented as a spectral sum of eigenvalues of the Dirac operator was subject of recent studies. We analyze the volume dependence as well as the continuum behavior of this quantity for quenched QCD using staggered fermions. Furthermore, we present first results using dynamical configurations.
متن کاملChiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature in the planar limit
We investigate numerically chiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature in the planar limit in the deconfined phase, both when it is stable and when the system is supercooled. We find chiral symmetry restoration at Tχ = Td, where Td is the temperature of the deconfinement transition in pure gauge theory and Tχ < Td in the supercooled deconfined phase. In the stable case the spectrum of the...
متن کاملThe role of the Polyakov loop in the Dirac operator of QCD at finite temperature
We show how all the contributions to the determinant of the DiracKogut-Susskind operator of QCD at finite temperature containing a net number of Polyakov loops become irrelevant in the infinite volume limit. We discuss also on two of the most interesting physical implications of this result: i) the restoration of the Polyakov symmetry in the full theory with dynamical fermions and ii) the total...
متن کاملDeconfinement through Chiral Symmetry Restoration in Two-Flavour QCD
We propose that in QCD with dynamical quarks, colour deconfinement occurs when an external field induced by the chiral condensate strongly aligns the Polyakov loop. This effect sets in at the chiral symmetry restoration temperature Tχ and thus makes deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration coincide. The predicted singular behaviour of Polyakov loop susceptibilities at Tχ is shown to be sup...
